There were a lot more pictures taken through out this day but for some reason I only got two sets instead of all six
These pictures were taken during the swift current river day! It was -36 on the river that day!
This is the Muskwa River in Fort Nelson, BC!
I had a really close call during training. We were doing rescues with the Cold Water Harness (yellow pool noodle thing). Everyone else was given a nice straight stretch where the current went parallel to the ice mantel (edge of the ice). When it came to my turn the instructor placed my "subject" on the edge of the ice where the current moved and flowed under the ice. A section no one tested.
So when I crawled out there to get my subject, the entire mantel broke underneath me and I went in. Now that's not a bad thing as that is part of the job. But the current kept pulling me under the ice. So I had one had on the ice pushing back and the other a hold of my subject. But I had to let go of the ice to get the noodle around the subject. So I braced my shoulder on the edge of the ice and quickly got the noodle on.
Due to the buoyancy of the Ice Rescue suits my feet kept getting pulled under the ice. So the noodle and myself are hooked to a single rope and pulled by four other rescuers. I gave the order to pull. What I didn't realize was the rope had gotten wrapped around my feet so when they pulled I went under the water and then under the ice. I reached back and found the edge of the ice and pulled myself out from under the ice and came up coughing.
I braced a shoulder on the edge of the ice again and reached down to untangle my feet. Once I did that I gave the order to pull and the subject and I were pulled up onto the ice.
I came away from my certificate and frost bite! And due to the close call the Fort Nelson Fire Department gave me an honorary members shirt
